Abstract

This issue of the DFI Journal is a Special Edition on Ground Improvement. The response from the profession worldwide was substantial, gratifying, and provided a great deal to consider as we embarked on this endeavor. As the abstracts slowly turned into draft manuscripts, this project grew to a point that has allowed us to complete Volume One, with enough content to have an eye on Volume Two in the near future.

It is clear now if it hasn’t been in the past, the construction industry is taking notice of ground improvement solutions in a big way. Part of this has been driven by the need for more efficiency and a competitive edge. Part of it is also that we, as engineers, have continued to move this technology forward, studying, improving and adding to it each year. Where there were once a handful of simple techniques for ground improvement, methods of strengthening, stabilizing, and structurally improving soils now range as wide as there are different soil types and construction problems. Tailoring the engineering approach to specific issues is much more subtle these days. There is also a significantly more comprehensive range of positive results possible.
