Lateral Forces on Pile Due to Soil Slope Creep
Article Type: Case Study

Albus, D. E. & Ghahreman, B.

Abstract

A single-family home constructed on the side of a slope was subjected to lateral forces due to soil slope creep on the pile foundation supporting the home. Lateral movement in the home was measured over a period of time and raised a concern the pile foundation may become over-stressed and fail. Threedimensional analyses were performed using the computer program “GROUP” to assess the potential forces induced in the piles over time as the creep mechanism progressed. Research was performed during the course of evaluating the conditions to consider various approaches to modeling. However, the authors found relatively little information on the subject of slope creep or analytical methods for evaluating the forces caused by the effect. A model was developed that provided a relatively good match to the response of the pile foundation at the site. From this the authors concluded that current research is deficient on the subject of soil slope creep and some current methods of analysis may be underestimating the forces induced in piles.
